About Eoghan

Eoghan McCabe, co-founder and Chairman at Intercom was born and raised in Ireland. Prior to founding Intercom, McCabe was a serial entrepreneur, founding several successful ventures.

McCabe became interested in the tech space in 1996 when he built his first website. In 2000, he started his first internet business venture, providing an internet portal to his small hometown in Ireland. McCabe’s interest in software development blossomed while he was studying Computer Science at Trinity College, Dublin, leading him to launch his own software company.

Entrepreneurship

In 2006, McCabe started Eoghan McCabe Limited. The company developed a website analytics and monitoring product known as FoldSpy, which allowed website owners to collect visitor insights, and empowered them to create better targeted online ads. In 2007, FoldSpy was acquired after growing significantly in popularity, measuring one billion screens in just 90 days.

Eoghan McCabe Limited later became Contrast, with McCabe as CEO. With Contrast, McCabe focused on developing novel software products for businesses of all sizes, including startups and established brands like Wells Fargo.

In 2008, McCabe co-founded a software as a service (SaaS) company called Exceptional and served as CEO. Exceptional focused on delivering unique developer tools for bug tracking in apps. Another successful exit, Exceptional was later acquired by Rackspace.

Founding Intercom

After developing a JavaScript app for communicating with customers, McCabe and his team sensed a need among web-based companies for similar tools. They founded Intercom in 2011. McCabe was Intercom’s CEO until July 2020, when he was named Chairman at Intercom.

McCabe later moved Intercom to San Francisco, where the company is still headquartered. Similar to McCabe’s past entrepreneurial success, Intercom quickly caught the attention of investors. The company has raised hundreds of millions of dollars through its funding rounds, with a current valuation in excess of $1 billion.

Intercom on Starting Up

Later, in 2017, McCabe co-authored a book for aspiring entrepreneurs and startups titled Intercom on Starting Up, which details McCabe’s experience building Intercom, lessons learned, and business advice.
